Conway Q&A/AMA/TMI
Conway » Devlog
Almost forgot it but it's August and I've had this tradition for years now on other platforms where I'll open up a journal for any questions every August.
So hey, it's warm here, I'm melting, and a bit bored ngl. If you ever had some burning questions then now is your chance. Of course, it doesn't have to be art-related, or related to Conway. It can be pretty much anything! That's the fun of it after all!
So feel free to chuck them my way and you shall get your answers.

Diggah die Szene mit deinem Fursona im Schiffsinneren ist echt so süess <_< Keine Frage, nur ein Kompliment. Tolle VN, da steckt viel Arbeit drin, und das merkt man :)
Hah, danke. :) Immer schön wenn die szenen gut landen :3
Do you like pineapple on your pizza? ÒwÓ
Bout to start some shit haha
Proud of you Nomax
Haha, thank you very much! Pineapple pizza is one of those "it's fine" sort of pizzas. Like, I'm not vehemently apposed to it if a pizza in front of me just happens to be a Hawaiian pizza, so it's edible, but I wouldn't go for them on my own according.
Hmm, you chose the middle ground, not outright rejecting it, neither fully accepting it.
Fair enough!
Take care of yourself OwO
Oh shoot, 11 of them? Well I guess I'll get breakfast ready and answer them while eating breakfast.
1. It started as the former. Given that it started as just an experiment at the time and that I had a limited timeframe for it I didn't really plan too much about it. Some basics, so that I wouldn't be completely lost, but only for version 2, after having realized how fun it is to work on it did I sit down to think about it properly and plan the characters in a way that I hope will be fun and engaging. So it's not necessarily one that I always wanted to tell in this particular way, but Nomax always was adjacent to ships, and so some form of ship-related story always was on my mind somewhere. That's also why the early part is most likely the worst writing.
2. Oh this'll be LONG. I mean even now we're not through day 2 on a journey that takes about 2 months. And there will be time skips of course. Not every day will involve several tens of thousands of words. But yet, we are essentially getting towards the end of the introductory period at this point. Where all characters have gotten a bit of attention, currently some of their hooks are still developing and after day 2 we hopefully will be able to let the player go in with more freedom and without the need to always cover every character development, and allow the player to miss more for the characters they don't want to be involved with.
3. Nope, given that this is gonna be a pretty big project I don't really want to open the avenue of other things.
4. It's fun! I mean I wouldn't put it into the game if I didn't enjoy it. And yes, Nomax is essentially a self-insert. He always was meant to have a story like this and he is the reason it happened, so it's not really out of left field, but he does just feel a bit more "playful" in the world, i guess, compared to the others. Which is fine of course, I want the different characters to bring different aspects and options to it.
5. It is a really fun game! Not too far in as of yet, but it's no surprise that it's good fun given Larian's games in the past.
6. That one is just impossible. I have such a wide wide range of music I enjoy. Picking out one song to encompass it is just impossible.
7. Maybe not my favourite, but i guess as an artistic whole maybe No country for old men? Again, just a very tough one to answer.
8. Return of the Obra Dinn. I'm not good at puzzle games, and never finished it, but man if that game didn't make me feel like Sherlock Holmes himself!
9. It's just what I enjoy, really. There wasn't a particular event or anything i don't think.
10. Most of my studies for animal heads is just trying to simplify their shapes and figure out how they are built. So i don't think i have any golden bullet there besides just doing that. In the end it's all about understanding what you're painting. So take the real deal, and try figure out why it looks the way it looks. What shape is the nose? How does it connect to the rest of the head, are there any prominent lines visible, are the eyes small? Large? How are they shaped? etc. Just be observant and pick up on these things to try and put them in your pictures.
11.Hmmm, I don't think I have anything at this moment, unfortunately. I mean Conway is the one project I work on currently, so pretty much everything gets poured into that.
And the main aspects for it are art, which of course ends up being my domain in a way that it's hard to bring other people into it at this point. The writing which I do have some help with here and there already and it's more of a case of being able to expand their involvement, ideally.
And then the third one is just the managerial stuff, coding, fixing any bugs i'm aware of, and just generally running down the list of tasks I've set for that month. The one area that is lacking is music, but unless you can play a violin or a cello or something like that, it's probably difficult to contribute to that. ^^;
I guess if you can do animations that might be another area that I'm not really qualified for. But again, just a pretty specialized one.
Those are the only two I can think of right now though.
And yes, thank you very much for playing it and of course, enjoying it as well! Wouldn't be nearly as fun if the game just happened in a vacuum. It's always great to know that people enjoy what I do!
I do quite like hiking! Nothing too crazy, mind, but just some 2-4 hour rounds or something. Nice and chill.
I guess music, too. It's a bit more passive since it's mostly just running while I work, but when I've got the time I do love just putting on some headphones, lying on the bed, and have an album run through.
Plenty of activity in your daily life it sounds! That's always a good thing! :D
What was your inspiration for creating Conway? Additionally, what's your writing process like? It's always fun to see how fellow writers approach their craft.
In the beginning it just was a project to try out new things. Had some burnout around the end of the year and decided to just play around throughout January and try stuff that I hadn't tried before, and potentially wouldn't be able to while doing commissions.
The VN was one of those. Now it wasn't entirely out of the blue mind you, I always wanted to expand my work beyond just paintings and involve the people experiencing my work a little more thoroughly. I just didn't quite know how. I started a few stories here and there, started some comics as well, but for one reason or another, it just didn't really feel right.
And the VN just was the project where it did feel right. Just the combination of art and writing works really nicely for me, it's a format that people quite enjoy engaging with as well.
So in that "test" period it just was enough fun to where I wanted to continue doing it.
As for my writing process, haven't actually done all too much before this VN, but at least for the VN the writing process is usually figuring out exactly what is needed for that particular month after a new version is released.
So, just checking again with my overarching idea for the story, where we're at, what characters might need some love, what are the next goal that particular part of the story needs to guide us to etc.
Figuring out the foundation for the month. And then it's fairly free-flowing, thinking of how the characters would interact in whatever situation it is, how to (ideally) make certain aspects interesting or intruiging, think of how I want to push certain characters forward and by how much and just feeling it out. Sometimes that's more rocky where each sentence is like goop, and other times you just have one of those days where everything slots in really smoothly.
